The short answer
Solid surface is easier to live with. Tile gives you more design choices. If you're tired of scrubbing grout and fighting mold, solid surface walls fix that for good. If you want a specific mosaic or pattern, tile is the way to get it.
| Solid surface | Tile | |
|---|---|---|
| Grout lines | None | Many |
| Sealing | Never | Grout, regularly |
| Mold in joints | Nothing to grow in | Common |
| Design choice | Solid, stone and marble looks | Almost unlimited |
| Repairs | Sand and polish | Replace tiles |
The grout problem
Grout is porous. It absorbs water and soap, stains, cracks over time and needs resealing. Mold and mildew grow in it. Solid surface walls are one sheet per wall with tight, sealed joints, and the material is non-porous, so there's nothing for grime to soak into.
Cleaning
Tile: a brush for the grout, regular resealing, and eventually regrouting. Solid surface: wipe with a mild, non-abrasive bathroom cleaner.
Looks
Tile comes in endless shapes, sizes and patterns. Solid surface comes in plain whites, speckled stone looks and marble looks, in large smooth panels. Many people like the calm look of a shower with no lines at all. See the options in the shower visualizer.
Repairs
A cracked tile means matching and replacing it, which is hard years later. Scratches or dull spots on solid surface can usually be sanded and polished out.
Cost
It depends on the size of the shower, the material and what's behind the old walls. Solid surface is often competitive with a quality tile job because there's no grout work and fewer layers. Russell gives free written estimates after measuring.
